What is new on the startup scene in New York City? Is it still disruptive or already consolidating? I went to a NY Tech Meetup at New Work City which live-streamed the event that was being held at the Skirball Theatre in New York last week to find out. Here are 6 new startups that pitched for attention. [Weiterlesen…] ÜberNew startups in NYC
My first Wordcamp
The San Francisco Wordcamp 2013 last week was the first wordcamp I went to. Ever since I became interested and then involved in WordPress I was told that this one would be the ultimate pilgrimage for each and every WP acolyte. However, I did not really have any expectations apart from gaining the latest news and announcements of the industry in a geeky kind of setting. [Weiterlesen…] ÜberMy first Wordcamp
Facepopular: La vida social
Two recent developments seem to have conspired to spawn a new social network to take on Facebook: Latin America’s increasing digital growth and the recent revelation/scandal that our Facebook data et al is being spied on by the American government. Meet Facepopular, the brand new Latin American “Facebook”. [Weiterlesen…] ÜberFacepopular: La vida social
10 years WordPress
Yesterday the WordPress community had a reason to celebrate … 10 years of its very existence. Apparently, 4999 people in 646 cities around the globe went to parties to celebrate. (How did they get the exact number and where was the missing one to make up for a full number?) Still, that is not a lot. Just 8 persons per city … how did that work? These statistics sound pretty fishy.
The turnout at the New York party at Tonic East, 3rd avenue, was also moderate. But it was fun and the location was great. Tonic East has an awesome rooftop with views of the Empire State building and even the Chrysler building in some distance. Since the occasion coincided with Memorial Day the Empire State building was suitable illuminated in the national colors. A spectacular sight.
Cheers to the next 10 years then, WordPress!
e-Marketing Day 2013
The German Chamber of Commerce Rhineland organized an “e-Marketing Day” last week at the venerable Borussia Mönchengladbach football stadium. It was the third event of this kind and aims to foster the understanding and importance of digital marketing for local small-and medium sized business. Located in the Borussia business lounge it featured guest speakers and local service providers specializing in social media and digital marketing. In a relaxed atmosphere visitors could attend several forums during the day and to get to know the companies presenting themselves (such as us).
Blogging street fashion
Chanté deLong is a New York fashion blogger and Brooklyn resident. Stephan Creifelds spoke to her about her blog Hey Hey Chanté, what motivates and inspires her and what’s next in street fashion blogging.
Stephan: I’ve followed your blog and your website and I think that you are doing a really good job. My first question is about you. Could you tell me a little bit about yourself and your motivation why you do the blog?
Chanté: I dropped out of school and following that I had a really messy breakup with someone I was dating at the time. So I was doing absolutely nothing with my life and I wanted to find a way to help other people, promote them. But not like a party promoter, just to support my friends and I felt the best way for me to support my friends was to create this blog.
Stephan: Friends in fashion?
Chanté: Yeah, I have a lot of designer friends. But when I first I started I had certain things to talk about, whatever I liked. It was like a fashion scrap book; I talked about art and music and keep it as varied as possible. [Weiterlesen…] ÜberBlogging street fashion
Free & Easy: 4 myths about SEO
Recently a question on the Linkedin group “Search Engine Land” sparked a discussion about the meaning and value of online marketing for “ordinary” business owner and the expectations that go with it. Ahmed Ahmed from Tomorrow People wanted to know: “What’s the silliest thing people say to you about digital marketing?” Admittedly, reading the answers were a lot of fun, but it also revealed quite a high level of ignorance that still exists. Here are four myths I gleaned from the discussion about digital marketing (in this case SEO). Gareth Goddard has turned the best “arguments” into an infographic. Time-wasting made easy
If the statistics are to be believed, the modern-day digital savvy user spends a lot of time on social media in general and on Facebook in particular. Somehow time “wasted” is judged differently for different platforms. It seems that two hours spent on LinkedIn is seen as productive (because we are doing business), but on Facebook it being frowned upon. Pinterest is not a clear-cut case. You could be planning your wedding or just browsing.
There are a few websites that leave you in no doubt what you are doing. When it comes to wasting time do it like the pro that you are. Here is our list. [Weiterlesen…] ÜberTime-wasting made easy
WordPress and eMusic
eMusic started in 1998 as one of the first music downloading services for MP3s. Previously a subscription-only service it changed to “a la carte” policy recently to allow its users to download music without subscription. On 19 March Scott Taylor, who led the company through its change from a Java-based backend system to a WordPress CMS (Content Management System) in 2011, held a presentation at the company’s headquarter in Manhattan and explained how eMusic utilizes WordPress. The site is now a prime example for a successful WordPress strategy and implementation. [Weiterlesen…] ÜberWordPress and eMusic

Corporate speak is largely discredited nowadays. Mention outside-the-box thinking and helicopter views and see eyes glazing over.
